A friend gave me his sand filter system from his pool. Should I replace the sand before I use it on my pool? The sand appears to be rather clean and or new.

Hi PapaRon,

If the sand looks good then there is no need to change the pool filter sand. The sand actually filters better over time as the sharp edges of the sand gets worn down making the sand bed less porous and filtering out smaller debris. Normally a sign that the sand needs to be changed is when you backwash the filter and you see pressure readings in the 25 psi range, we typically see sand needing to be replaced every 5-7 years.

If you do decide to replace your sand, then we have a Video on How to Replace Your Pool Filter Sand which you may find helpful.
