Large pool with 55,000 gallons water.  Water tested and all areas good, but the water turned green.  Installed new pump and new filter so the equipment is working properly.  Used Yellow Out but nothing happened, then used Clean Aid and still nothing.  Was advised to shock the pool so have used 13 pounds  or more of powder shock, and 12 gallons of liquid shock but water still green.  It looks like there is something yellow in the water that makes the water look green.  There is nothing on the walls so I am not sure it is algae.  How do I get rid of the green water?  Thanks for your help!!

Hi OhioPoolLady,

The most important thing to get started is to get good test results. Could you post your test results for Chlorine, CYA, pH, Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness? If we know these #'s then we should be able to prescribe you with the proper approach to clear your green pool. I'm actually going through this process right now and have had very good success, we will wait to get your #"s.

Thank You

I had sent the numbers but see they did not post here so I will try again.  Chlorine was 3 but dropped to .5,, Calcium hardness 200, CYA 40. Total Alkanity 100, PH 7.1 but have added to increase,  In process of using Green Out but is not working .  Anything you can suggest would be greatly appreciated because frustrated with situation .  Thank you!

Hi OhioPoolLady,

We prescribe to the SLAM method if you have algae then this is almost always treated by chlorine. This method will take 2-3 days but will bring your pool back to crystal clear. Here is the method we prescribe to clear a green pool.

First you will need bring your chlorine up to shock level which is normally in the  20 PPM of chlorine, see correct shock level here, you will do this by adding 7-8 gallons of liquid chlorine to the pool, here you can calculate how much clhorine you will need to add to your pool. Chlorine is consumed from your pool by two things organics (algae) and sunlight. Since your pool is green you have algae so the chlorine will be consumed by the algae until all of the algae is killed by the chlorine, this means you will be continually adding chlorine to the pool during the first 24-48 hours to keep your chlorine at the 20 PPM of chlorine. Once you have killed all the chlorine your pool may turn cloudly this is the dead algae, so you will want to continually clean your filter, vacuum the pool and brush all of this is very important.

Another side note it is important during this process to keep a CYA of between 30 - 40 as your CYA acts as sunscreen for the chlorine so if your CYA is 0 then the chlorine will burned off of by the sun very quickly and if you CYA is too high then it makes the chlorine ineffective. Your CYA level of 40 is great. Here is a really great article giving all the Details of the SLAM Method I would follow this step by step and your pool will be clear soon.

Note that the 7-8 gallons of chlorine and the 20 PPM are estimates use the numbers you receive using your the calculators in the in links I provided. Please keep us posted on how this works, one last thing is you will need a good test kit like the TF100 Test Kit which can test chlorine at high levels as normal test kits only test to 5-10 PPM of chlorine.
