Our pool became cloudy and registered low chlorine. It also became very cloudy.  So We bought a new Hayward t-3 cell for our 10000 gal. Pool. The pool stayed cloudy and the chlorine readings were still low. We purchased liquid chlorine two times and now it is holding the chlorine. How do we know if the tcell is working?

Hi Gummygirly,

I would bump the Aquarite up to 100% and continually test your chlorine over the next week to see if the chlorine level drops when you are not adding liquid chlorine. If it does continue to drop then that would indicate that the salt chlorinator is not producing chlorine. I would also check your stabilizer levels (CYA) which should be between 70-80 PPM for a salt pool. One other trick you might try is to test the water coming out of the return jets as this should be highly chlorinated as this is the chlorinated water coming right from the salt chlorine generator. Keep us posted.

Ok well I took another samples to pool store and same result- no chlorine. So I bought more liquid chlorine and added it. I put the cell on super chlorinate. Next day I tested it right from jet and it showed perfect chlorine. So next day I tested again an it was good. So I went to set it on a percentage  and found that when I put it on 60% I could hear a click if I tried to set it lower. Also if I set it lower the diagnostic output shows zero.  I have left it on that  60% setting for several days and pool  seems to be ok. I have never set it this high in the past, so I'm curious as to why it has to be set this high.

Hi Gummygirl,

I would test the chlorine again after it has been 7 days since you added the liquid chlorine to make sure the chlorine that you were was still not the liquid chlorine. Please report back.

since I'm asking about my pool, how can I clean the tile trim around my fiberglass pool. Can I clean it while in the pool?

I have checked chlorine now seems to be gone but as I said before I am still keeping it at 60%. Do you think that is high?

Hi Gummygirl,

As far as the tiles go what are seeing on your tile? Is it calcium build up or is dark algae stains in the grout? or something else?

In regards to the question about the 60% chlorine production I don't think that is high, but you should have chlorine in your water. The AquaRite should be producing chlorine and you should have chlorine in the water soley based off of the Aquarite and without you adding liquid chlorine. Either your water chemistry is off resulting in the chlorine to be consumed quickly in the pool or your salt system is not producing chlorine. Normally if the salt system is not producing chlorine then this is due to a bad salt cell or a bad PCB board. My hunch is  that it is the salt cell or board since you did show a chlorine reading in the pool after adding the liquid chlorine. Could you post your water chemistry #'s to this post so we can see if this is a water chemistry issue or a salt system issue?

I mistyped previously. My chlorine and other chemistry are GOOD. (Replacing the word "gone". So should o leave setting on 60%? In previous years it has never been higher than 30% to keep chlorine in pool. Also the tiles have some calcium and dark stain( not algae) can I stand in pool and scrub with a cleaner?

Hi Gummygirl,

I would continue to test your chlorine and if you are not above 5 PPM of chlorine then you will be fine at 60%. For the stains I would try rubbing a chlorine tablet on the dark stains and for the calcium deposits use a diluted muriatic acid solution and a wire scrub brush. You will be fine to be in the pool while you are cleaning the tiles.
