I have an older inground pool that has always had a pump with a plug. I now have been told any new pump has to be hardwired due to codes. Question is, how am I suppose to backwash my filter or clean out pump basket without having to run down to my basement to shut off breaker every time?

MissDIY - I'm assuming you have a modern, variable speed pump with the timer built in. You'll need to hardwire the pump using conduit and a water-tight junction box. You can get flexible conduit, connectors and the watertight boxes at Lowes or Home Deopt or any major hardware store. If you don't have a built-in timer, you'll have to wire one of those into the line between your wall box and the pump. I'd recommend engaging an electrician. I'm pretty handy and have wired 120v rooms, workshops, etc. The 240v on the pump was not something I wanted to mess with - or screw up. :-)

In my area the backwash has to be connected to the sanitary sewer line, so there's no water when I backwash. I do have a wall switch between my timer and my pump so I can shut off power while I'm working, but everything is wired with teh wtaertight conduit so there's really no need.

Thanks for the feed back! Yes, having an electrician do it for me. He said he can install a switch outside for me. I really don't like the fact of not being able go bring pump in for the winter though! In upstate ny I have always brought it inside. Pump is a single speed 1hp. Hayward maxflo xl
