I am looking to replace my very old DE filter with a cartridge filter and not sure how to choose a suitable cartridge filter. I have a 20 x 40 inground pool with 1-1/2" plumbing. If possible I would like to use my fairly new 1HP pump with a cartridge filter. I am looking for recommendations for a cartridge filter that would be suitable for me. Thanks.

Hello Gary - We'd recommend the Pentair Clean and Clear model 160317. This is a 150 square foot cartridge filter. It has 2" ports but you can use a reducer for your 1.5" plumbing.

Thank you for the recommendation. I was wondering if there would be any benefit to replace my current 1HP pump with another pump with more horsepower, when used with that Pentair filter?

It won't help the filter to install a higher HP. The filters do a better job when the water is moving slower. I'd only increase the HP if you need the additional flow for things like water features, solar panels, or vacuuming.
