Hi guys. I just got my Raypak natural gas plumbing done and my variable speed Hayward VS700 is now running. I have not yet hooked up the electric to the heater yet but wanted to ask a few questions that are bearing on my mind. First, common sense tells me the pump has to be running before firing the heater. My question is this: since the pump is on a programmed schedule, if I set the pool heater at desired temperature, will the pressure switch automatically shut the heater off when the pump stops during the day? But moreover, will the heater come back on when the pump starts again, without me having to reset the heater? And finally, what speed does my pump have to run for the heater to work properly? Here is my pool information: pool is 18x36 and 5 feet on deep end. I did the math and there is about 17000 gallons of water in my pool. Pump is variable speed and the lowest it is set to run is 1000rpm when it is running. The plumbing is all 1 1/2 inch and there is a large Hayward sand filter, and a salt generator with controller. Salt generator installed distally to  heater. Any hep will be greatly appreciated!

We wouldn't recommend relying on the water pressure switch to automatically turn the heater on and off. You can wire the heater to the load side of your pump timer. That way it will turn on and off when the pump does.

There is a minimum flow rate of 25 gpm and a max flow rate of 125 gpm. You'll have to test the low speeds of your pump to see what will generate a minimum of 25 gpm.

Thank you for that reply. I would take your advice but the vs700 pump has a built in controller with no load side. That's why I asked. Is there any other solution. I really like the built in pump controller and would like to use it

You could add a separate timer for the heater. The mechanical timers are inexpensive.

Intermatic pE653RC. Looks like a great solution. What do you think?

Yes, that would work.
