I just bought a house with a pool and am new to all of this so I will do my best with the terminology. Basically we are afraid to leave our pump on without babysitting it because it loses its suction. As in the pump will stay on but the water won’t move through it. I don’t think priming it every hour is normal. So our pool turned green because the pump was rarely on. My dad and I shocked it, vacuumed it then backflushed it and it seemed to work great for a couple hours but now it’s back to losing its power. Any ideas?

The likely cause of the loss of suction is a dirty filter. I'm assuming this because it worked well for a couple hours after it was backwashed. A filter will fill up quick if the pool is green. Check out our article titled "Why are My Pool Jets Not Working".
