I have a 13,000 gallon pool.  The cartridge filter needs to be replace (cracked).  I'm pretty sure it's a Pentair 420 (tag torn.  It;s the original when we bought the house)  4 cartridge.

Do I need a 420 ($1,100) or can I safely go smaller.

Mostly its just me and my wife with occasional friends and family.

I've got a 200 square foot single cartridge on my 10k gallon pool. It is more than enough for my pool. I rarely have to clean it.

We'd recommend something like the Waterway ProClean Plus 200 model PCCF-200.
