How much wattage for pool lights?

I have a roughly 32' long pool that is about 12' wide for one-half of the pool and then broadens out to about 18' with large curves in the corners at the other end.  There are currently lights positioned about halfway on each side.  The pool has a maximum depth of six feet at the drain.

Is there a formula that would tell me whether to use 300, 400 or 500 watt lights for this size and shape of pool?

Also, it is currently being replastered.  Would filling in one of the lights and going with just one light on the side where you approach the pool be more attractive and still be enough light?

Hi GPaulJ,

I would not fill in one of the lights especially with a pool with curves you will have dead spots in the pool which is not lighted. There is no formula that I know of for wattage, but based on your size pool and the # of lights that you have I think 300 Watt would be sufficient. If your lights are 120V then you could always swap out the bulb to a different wattage if you were not happy with the output.
