Hello,

i have Hayward Northstar 4010N pool pump. I'd like to replace the motor (for cost savings). Will the Vgreen 270 VSP be a good replacement. Will the electronics on the top of the Vgreen allow the pump to fit on the wet side of the Northstar pump? Also, is the Hayward Tristar VSP a drop-in replacement for the Northstar? Can the 2 speed pumps be viable and save as much as the VSP?

Thanks,

Sean

Sean - The Vgreen 270 does not work with the Northstar series. Your options would include the single-speed USN1152 or the dual-speed 5112-062.

The dual speed motor can save up to 50% of a single-speed operating cost. It's not as much as a VSP but it is a significant savings.

The Tri-Star is not a drop-in replacement.

Thanks for your response, Rob. What will be the requirements for me to have a variable speed pump? Is it just fitting it in the same location as the Northstar and replumbing it to my current pool system?

The replacement variable speed pump would connect the same way as far as electricity. The ports wouldn't line up so some minor plumbing would be required.

Do you have a lot of water features or an attached spa? That is usually why a Northstar would have been used.

Yes, I have an attached spa and a waterfall. However, the waterfall has its own pump. The Polaris 280 cleaner has its own booster pump. I guess after looking at my needs, the low speed on the new 2-speed pump is all I need at this point. I may turn on the waterfall 10 times a year if we have company over and the booster pump may run for an hour a week after the pool is cleaned.

I agree that a 2-speed motor is probably the best route.
