Why do I need a chlorine generator

Tell me something. My chlorine generator has failed and until I can afford a new one I am having to add liquid chlorine to the pool to keep my levels correct. At $5 a week, why do I even need a chlorine generator? The cost of the chlorine is negligible. Plus it requires less maintenance. Sounds like a way for pool companies just to make more money off of us.

Hi Mkehara,

The quick answer is you do not need a salt chlorine generator. The benefit of the salt chlorine generator is that it manufactures it's own chlorine preventing you from needing to go to the store each week to buy liquid chlorine, it also saves you the cost of the chlorine as you are making your own chlorine. Normally we see the salt cells last 3-5 years so you would need to do the math to see if this is actually a cost savings over purchasing liquid chlorine. The chlorine that is produced by a salt chlorine generator does not have any chloramines and chloramines are typically associated with the negative side effects of chlorine like chlorine smell, itchy skin and red eyes. Normally when you add it up the salt system route vs. buying chlorine they cost about the same but many people opt for salt as they don't have to go to the store to buy chlorine each week and they like the better quality chlorine. I hope this helps.

Thank You

Patrick
