Green/cloudy water - Used two different shocks and water has been cloudy for days. Looks terrible.

Water was perfect after opening in May. I maintained clear, sparkly water. Accidentally I used two different shocks (cal hypochlorite and trichloro s triazinetrione) 10 days ago and water is so cloudy with a tint of green. I've used clarifier and algae guard. PH and chlorine are within normal range. I am at a loss as to what to do to get the water back. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Blondie1031,

I think that the shock you added actually did its job, normally when you use shock you get a clouding of the water after the shock is added. The cloudiness is the dead algae that the shock killed, so if you had a lot of algae than the cloudiness gets worse as there is more dead algae. I would suggest to run your filter 24/7 and clean your filter 1-2 times per day until the cloudiness clears, all the while still maintaining your chlorine and pH levels and the appropriate levels. Once the cloudiness clears you can return to your normal pump run times and filter cleaning schedule.

Thank You

Hi Patrick,

Thank you for your reply. We have been running 24/7 and cleaned and changed the filters several times.

Can you take a new test and post the newest results here as that will help out.

Thank You

Will do. Here's a few pics.

Ph is 7.4. Chlorine is now way off the charts.

Blondie1031,

Prior to adding the chlorine did you have a lot of algae in the pool? If you did then I really think the cloudiness is the dead algae. I'm going through this exact scenario with my pool now and it has taken 7-10 cycles of vaccuuming, brushing the pool walls and cleaning my filter to finally get the pool cleared. I have also noticed that if I turn the pump off for a period of time and do not agitate the water than the all of the dead algae settles to the bottom of the pool and the pool gets very clear, as all the algae settles to the bottom of the pool. I have also found that Flock N Vac works very well, it coagulates fine particles together and drops them to the pool floor making it easy to vacuum.

I've been running the pump  24/7 and will try what youve done and turn it off for a period of time. In hindsight there was more algae than I realized prior to the shocking.  I put more algaecide in this morning and now shocked it again. Brushed it today as well. Also vacuumed.  We will see what the morning brings. thank you so much for your response - good luck!

My free chlorine is 5 ppm and total chlorine is 10 ppm.

Hi Blondie,

The combined chlorine of 10 ppm still means you have algae, I would continue to shock the pool until your combined chlorine goes below .5ppm. The presence of a high combined chlorine will contribute to the milky/ cloudy water. Here is a good article on Combined Chlorine Problems the suggestion for destroying combined chlorine is a shock treatment.

Hi Blondie,

I was just checking back in to see if you made any headway on the cloudy water? I hope it is getting better!

Thank You
