An employee at our local pool store told me to only use a container with pool water to use test strips. Never heard of that before. Lo and behold, I got a perfect reading by doing this, but a higher reading by dipping the strip. Anyone ever heard of this?

I always test from a container with pool water taken from a about a foot deep rather than the surface, whether using a strip or taking sample to the pool store. Those are the instructions on my sample bottle and what I have seen suggested online.

These directions from Aquacheck don't mention using a container of water. If you use a container, I recommend testing the water within a relatively short time.
