I changed my sand in my sand filter last season. all seemed well. clear water. I noticed this season water is not as clear. water is balanced. is it possible the sand is bad? or was i sold bad sand? what is the best sand?

The best sand is .4-.5 mm silica sand. The filter sand should last several years. There is a chance that the sand has formed channels and it's allowing small debris to get through. You can open up the filter and look at the sand to see if it channeled. If it did, you can put a garden hose in the tank and turn the water on. While the water is running mix up the sand so the channels disappear.
Another option would be to use some water clarifier to help clear up the water.
