Sand in pool

I have noticed sand in my pool, and I was told by my repair guy that I probably had a broken lateral in my sand filter and that I needed to replace the sand filter. When I told him the multi-port valve doesn't open and close completely without a bit of "jiggling" to make sure I close off the backwash so it doesn't leak, he said that could be the problem instead of a broken lateral. I could replace the multiport valve a lot less expensively than replacing the entire sand filter, but I don't want to do that if I'm going to end up replacing the whole thing anyway.

Could the valve itself be allowing sand into the pool, or is it more likely a broken lateral or even upright inside the filter?

Hi Hollie,

We wrote an article on Sand in Your Pool which talks about the common reasons why you get sand back in your pool and the two most common are a broken lateral and a bad spider gasket. If you are having the issue with the valve then that leads me to believe that the spider gasket is the culprit. If it is not the spider gasket then you can replace the broken lateral ($10 part) without needing to replace your entire filter. We do have a Video on How to Replace a Broken Sand Filter Lateral as well as a Video on How to Replace a Pool Filter Spider Gasket which you may find helpful.

A few years ago, I changed the spider gasket, and I can certainly do it again if needed. But one problem seems to be a loose handle on the valve itself, and this looseness causes the valve to not line up easily with the desired settings. I have not removed the top of the valve lately to inspect whether this handle can be tightened, or if, indeed it needs replacing itself. If after doing so, it appears that I need a new handle assembly, can this part be purchased separately?

Thanks for your information,

Hollie

Hi Hollie,

Yes the handle assembly can be purchased seperately. Can you give me the make and model of your filter, there should be a label on the side of the filter tank with this information or if you could post a few photos to this post that would be helpful.

Thank You
