we bought a house and with it came a pool. We bought the house w no idea how the pool was or if it worked. The neighbors say it was completely filled with sand and dirt in the past few years. We have it cleaned out now. We have ran it for the last month. We have a pump and sand filter installed. The sand filter has problems but works most of the time. There has been sand and black specks entering through the jets for awhile. It has not been poring in for the past few weeks and we are starting to have a cleaner pool. The problem is Every time I run the vacuum, sand billows in. How do I get the remainder of the lines cleared out? Will it clear itself out eventually? Pool people that don’t know the whole story often say it’s algae. I’ve tried vacuuming on the waste setting and it stillbillows out. Does anyone have any ideas?

If there is sand in the plumbing, it should work itself out. After you backwash the sand filter, do you run the filter on rinse for a couple minutes? This will help prevent filter sand from returning back to the pool.

If the problem persists, you may have a broken lateral or standpipe in the filter.
