I'm considering replacing my old sand filter.
Last year I replaced the sand with HTH sand.
Maybe that is the issue?
The pool never seemed to get completely clear.
All laterals in the filter looked fine during the sand replacement...

I have one of these 50 sq ft cartridge filters, given to me from a friend.
How about putting that in-line after the sand filter?

I have an ancient PAC-FAB PF-50 22" Sand Filter - never really has been a problem until last year.
The manual says it is 2.6 sq ft, flow rating is 50 GPM, 200 lbs Sand Filter.
Turnover Capacity is stated as: 2 turns per day: 36,000 gallons

In-ground pool is 30' long, 25' wide. max 8' deep.
I calculate it to be 27,000 gallons. One line from the skimmer and one return line.
I don't need a complete turnover every 8 hours. Every 10 is good enough in my book.

Pump is Sta-Rite Max-E-Glas Pump PE5D-181L
45-55 GPM with 60-70' Head
I calculate I have 68 feet of head.

I have 1.5" lines, and if not this exact muyltiport, then one very similar:

If I get rid of the sand filter completely, think I can get away with this one?
Hayward Star Clear Cartridge Filter 50 Sq Ft. 1 1/2 Inch Ports - W3C500
Turnover 10 Hrs: 30000 gal.

Or perhaps the Star Clear Plus 75 Sq Ft. Filter 1 1/2" Ports - C751 is a safer bet.
But those are no longer in stock. so that leaves this one as my only other 1.5" port option:
Star Clear Plus 120 Sq Ft. Filter 1.5" Ports - W3C1200

Sand is better than cartridge though, right?

Very interested to hear your thoughts. Thanks.
