I moved to a house with an older pool earlier this year. I have updated a few things. I have converted it to salt and replaced a single lightswitch on the pump with a digital timer. I now know I"m missing a key feature. Freeze protection. I'm in Nashville, TN. I currently have the pump running from midnight to 9:00 am. I turn it on manually when it approaches freezing during the day. I would like to automate this process. I have foudn plenty of timers that have freeze protection. I'm looking for 1 more feature though. Remote monitoring with an app of some sort. I realize this takes me into a the pool automation area. All of those seem like way overkill for what I have. I just want a pump timer with freeze protection and remote monitoring of the switch status. If there is a simple pool automations ystems that can do it, I'm up for that. Thanks in advance for the great advice on this forum. Here are my specifics.

Hello Matthew - There is a simple option for your application but it would require upgrading the motor. Century offers a pump motor and a wireless motor interface. The motor that would fit your Hayward Super Pump is model ECM16CU. This is a 1.65 variable speed motor with built-in freeze protection. This is the most energy-efficient option available. It has the ability to save you up to 80% on your energy consumption.

The ECM16CU motor has a control on top of the motor. This may or may not be an issue for your current setup. Based on the pictures you sent, it looked like plumbing went directly over the motor. Some plumbing may need to be done if that plumbing is in the way of the control.

The wireless motor interface is called the Century VLink. The VLink will give you the ability to control/monitor the pump from any smart device (Phone, Tablet, PC).

Thanks! I was hoping to just replace the switch/timer, but maybe that is not an option. I could deal with the plumbing issue if it need some rerouting. That is not an issue. Attaching the motor to the old pump scares me a bit. I would be shocked if when I opened everything up there wasn't something failed that needed to be replaced. That would be my luck. If I wanted to go ahead and just replace the pump at the same time, what is a good fit? A few more questions:

1) Would this include any way to control the chlorinator? It doesn't look like it would. Is simply using the flow detector sufficient? Right now, it is on the same timer as my pump.

 2) It sounds like I would need to put a protective housing over the Vlink controls because it is not waterproof, right?

If you replace the complete pump, we'd recommend the PureLine Prime model PL2605. It utilizes the V-Green 1.65HP motor and the pump housing is a drop-in replacement for the Super Pump.

1) This would not include a way to control the chlorinator. You could leave your existing timer in place and just have that control the salt chlorinator.

2) The VLink is weather resistant. We installed one outside on a customer's house a year ago. We did not add any additional cover and it is still working great.

Thanks. For a $200 difference, I think I would likely go ahead and replace everything and get the new pump. Maybe that is overkill. Is the pump you rccomend as good as the Super Pump I have? I beleive they share the same housing. The QA for the VLink said it was not weatherproof. Thanks for the correct info there.

The Prime pump is every bit as durable as the Super Pump. Plus, the warranty on the Prime pump is 18 months. The Super Pump only has a 12 month warranty.
