pool motor/pump problems

Our pool motor is making a high pitched whining noise (like a bearing is going). We just replaced it a few years ago. We currently have a Century Centurion HP1 square flange motor (B2853). What is the energy efficient motor comparible to this motor? When looking at our pump manual, I'm not sure if this was even the correct replacement motor for our pump. When we replaced the motor, we matched the amps and voltage, even though the frame was different (the manual says 48y frame, but the 56y frame motors had the correct amps and volts).

There is also a leak coming from the pump. The pump is maybe 11 years old and we haven't had any other problems except for a small leak. The pump has been discontinued (Pentair Pinnacle 342854). Should we replace the housing or the entire pump? Again, would like to go energy efficient if the whole pump needs replacing.

Hi Michele87,

I would lean towards replacing the entire pump as it is not going to be much more expensive than replacing the motor and you have a leak. Can you supply me with the following information so I can suggest the proper replacement pump...

  • How many gallons is your pool?
  • What size filter do you have? (there should be a label on the side of your filter with this information)
  • What size plumbing is going into your pump (there should be digital writing on your pipe that says 1.5" or 2")
  • Approximately what is the distance from your pump to main drain at the bottom of your pool?
  • Approximately what is the distance from your pump to the skimmer at the sid of your pool? (if you have 2 supply both distances)
  • Could you post a photo showing the plumbing going into and out of your pump?

I believe our pool holds about 22,000 gallons (it is a 16x32 grecian).

I am including a picture of our filter because I am unsure of the size. The pool was already here when I moved in 10 years ago.

The couplings on the plumbing are labeled 1.5 inches.

Estimate of 30-35 ft from main drain to pump.

Hi Michele87,

Based on all the information you supplied I would suggest the Pureline Pure Flow 1.5 HP Variable Speed Pump. This pump will save you quite a bit on your operational cost as this pump can run at a very low speed at 750 RPM's up to 1.5 HP when it runs at 3450 RPM's. When running at the lower RPM's the operational cost is a fraction of the price of when running at the full 1.5 HP. Most people can set the pump to run at a pretty low speed and then you have the ability to run at the higher speed when you need to do so for vacuuming. One other note is that this can only be wired at 230V so you want to make sure you are operating your pump at 230V. HELLO

I HAVE A CHALLENGER PUMP THAT IS ONLY 16 MONTHS OLD, AND IS MAKING ALL KIND OF NOISE.  WOULD IT BE BETTER TO CHANGE THE BEARINGS OR BUY A NEW MOTOR?
