our AG (24' x 52") was closed and covered for the winter by our installer, but when we took off pool cover the other day, the water level was down 18 inches below skimmer line, dark green and full of leaves! we aren't experts on pool maintenance and need to know how to bring pool back to normal! weve removed leaves and are thinking we should have water trucked in (we have well water so cant fill on our own) - and then go from there? we are hoping we dont have to drain pool and start from scratch. what should we do?? thanks for any and all advice

Hi Sophie,
I would suggest the following...
- Check all your plugs at equipment to make sure they are in place. Many times drain plugs and gauges are removed for the winter
- Add water back to the pool to go up half way on the skimmer opening
- Start up your pump & filter. After starting up your filter it is a good idea to clean your filter through backwashing or cleaning your cartridge.
- Before adding chemicals you will want to clean your pool this means brushing the wall, netting any debris and vacuuming your pool.
- Add Chemicals I would suggest a Spring Chemical Start Up Kit
- After adding chemicals let your pump and filter run for 24-48 hrs and continue to vacuum as necessary.

New problem. This relates to our Hayward pump which is 3 years old. Got pool up and running per your instructions - everything working fine - ran pump/filter for several hours then turned off overnight. This morning won't start! No humming just zip. Checked breakers and everything else related to electricity getting to pump and it all seems fine? What could it be? Was seemingly in good working order when we turned it off. Help!

I would first check to see if you are getting voltage to the pump, you can use a multimeter to measure the voltage at your outlet this should be 115V. If you don't have a multimeter then you can pick one up at the hardware store for $20 and they are handy to have around the house. If you are getting voltage at the outlet then this tells me that your motor is bad and needs to be replaced. If you are not getting voltage at the outlet then this would be some sort of electrical problem (i.e. breaker, tripped gfci, etc..)

Continuing saga with pool pump - fixed first issue by unplugging from outlet and then plugging back in - everything came back to life!! Then ran fine for a couple of days. tonite turned off for a little while and when tried to turn on just got the low hum!! Wtw! Husband says we don't have a capacitor? Is that right? This is getting ridiculous! Lol

Hi Sophie,
Sorry to hear about the problems. Your pump would have a capacitor, some pumps have an external capacitor which looks like a hump on the top of the motor and others have an internal capacitor which is not visible by just looking at the pump. The humming sound is a sign that your capacitor is bad. With a bad capacitor most people opt to replace the entire pump. Do you know the make and model of your pump? Could you supply this to me and I can then let you know which capacitor you need as well as which pump we would suggest.

Hi Patrick - husband says Pump is Hayward Power Flo Matrix pump series. Model #sp1592tlfp. It's maybe 3-4 years old - pool is 24'x52" round AG. Thanks for your help !

Hi Sophie,
It looks like I stand corrected and your husband is correct this motor does not have a capacitor and it sounds like your windings are bad. We would suggest replacing your motor, you would require a BN25SS Motor and a Hayward Matrix Shaft Seal.

Hi Sophie,
I would suggest the Hayward Matrix SP1592 1 HP Pump as it will be an easy swap out of your current pump. I believe your current pump may have a twist lock plug and the SP1592 comes with a standard 3 prong plug, so you will need to swap out the cord from your new pump with the cord from the old pump but that should be very easy to do.

Hi again! I think current pump has 3 prong plug - at least that's what I saw when I unplugged it the other day? Husband is enquiring about going to a 1.5 hp pump as opposed to the 1?
