If you could eliminate any of the 90 degree angles on the suction side of the pump that would help out quite a bit with any priming issues. Also if your plumbing is 1.5" going into the pump if you can replace the pipe directly going into the pump with 2" that will also help. I would also consider it time to replace the pump with something like PureLine Prime 1.5 HP Pool Pump.
