Hayward SP32950VSP Pump - Noise

I have a Hayward VS32950VSP pool pump. It makes a very loud whining noise. The pump was here when I moved in, but I think it is about 5 years old. I've watched some videos here on replacing pump motor bearings and have a few questions:

1) Is this likely a bearing issue, or more likely something else?

2) If it is a bearing issue, are bearings available for this pump motor or would I need a whole new motor assembly?

3) I see some discussions on here about Hayward HL32950VSP pumps, what is the difference between that model number and the similarly named VS32950VSP pump model that I have or are they the same?

Any guidance or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks! -Damon

Hi Damon, I would bet that the bearings are going bad on the motor. That is the normal cause of the sound you are describing.

It is possible to replace the bearings, but it is more difficult to do it on a variable-speed motor than on a traditional motor.  We only recommend that a qualified motor repair shop replace the bearings in a variable speed pool pump motor since the magnets in the motor are very strong and there’s a potential for a hand injury during reassembly.

I can't find anything on the good ol' internet for a VS32950VSP part number, so I would guess that they are the same as the HL32950VSP pumps.  Manufacturers sometimes change a digit here and there for private-labeled pumps or to help specify where they were purchased.

Thank you very much for the reply!

Sounds like it will be difficult to replace just the bearings. If I were to replace the entire motor assembly, would the correct part be "Motor Assembly - SPX3400Z1ECM"?

Also it sounds like I would probably need to replace the seals with "Tune Up Kit Hayward TriStar/EcoStar - GOKIT81", is that the correct seal kit for this motor?

Yes, but note that the Motor Assembly - SPX3400Z1ECM is just the motor - you would reuse your motor controller (though I'm sure you noticed that).

And yes, the GOKIT81 will have all new o-rings and a new motor shaft seal for your Hayward TriStar VS pump.  Be sure to verify your pump style from that last link to be sure it is indeed a TriStar-series pump.  You are good to go if the strainer housing is the same as yours.
