Hayward DE Filter pressure question...

I have a Hayward DE-3620 filter. I am just now opening our pool. I cleaned the filter grid in a muriatic solution for 24 hours. The grids looked brand new! I reassembled the filter, connected it to the plumbing, turned it on and got a psi reading of 15.5. In accordance with my owners manual, I then applied 4.5 pounds of DE through the nearest skimmer.

The 15.5 did not go up at all!  I then ran the filter for a few hours in a very dirty pool. The pressure went to 26 psi. So, I backwashed/rinsed it and it dropped back to 15.5.

I'm sure the gauge is working because when the filter basket filled up with debris, the pressure on the gauge went down to 0.0.

Shouldn't the reading go up when I add 4.5# of DE? And isn't 15.5 unusually large for the initial pressure reading of a clean filter with no DE in it?  I don't know whether I have enough or too much DE in the filter!

Help!

Hello JohnGarrity - The pressure does usually rise slightly after adding DE. 4.5 pounds of DE would be correct for the Hayward DE3620. As far as the starting PSI, every pool is different. A starting PSI of 15.5 is not unusually high. It sounds like the filter is working properly. It started at 15.5 and raised to 26 psi after operating a few hours in a dirty pool.

Have you noticed DE coming back into the pool? Does the gauge read 0 when the pool shuts off? If so, the gauge is working properly.

InyoRob,

Thanks for the quick reply!  I do not see any DE coming back into the pool; and the gauge does read 0 when the system is off. I did clean the grids again today and they were filthy.

I'll just keep monitoring it. Thanks again!

Hello, I also have a Hayward DE 3620 filter and I cleaned the filter element and put everything back together and now the gauge stays at a reading of zero. The pump makes a noise but I get NO pressure reading. Further, I also cleaned the baskets from the filter, skimmers, and my salt system. Any advice? Thank you

Did you prime the pump and bleed the air from the filter when the pump was turned on?
