I haven't been happy with using chlorine as my sanitizer and I'm trying to figure out the best alternative. I need the pros and cons of switching off from cholorine to eithe bromine or to a salt generator. I have a fresh fill with no chemicals added and I'm getting ready to open the pool next week. It's an inground pool at approximately 14,000 gallons. ...and go

Hi ObiWan,

I really like salt that is what I have and I have been really happy. We put together a Video on Pool Salt Systems which you may find helpful. The upside to salt is that you are making your own chlorine and the chlorine that is produced has no chloramines meaning no chlorine smell or red eyes, also since you are making your own chlorine you no longer need to purchase liquid chlorine, tablets or shock. The downside is that every 3-5 years you will need to purchase a replacement salt cell.

As far as salt systems go I really like the PureLine CrystalPure Salt Systems.

I am leaning towards the salt system for the cholorine generation ..but what about bromine..pros and cons please ? I realize that Ill have to replace my inline chlorinator and pay more for bromine but does't it last longer than choloroine .. I'm in a crunch for a decision as I'm opening our pool this coming weekend and I want to do it right ..the first time.. Thanks

Hi ObiWan,

In my experience bromine works better in hot water like spas but I have not seen much benefit for pools. The price for bromine is typically more expensive than chlorine and I'm not sure it is worth the extra money.
