Air leak problem

I have had a pool for about 40 years and never have had this problem. I need a professional opinion as to the cause and solution.

I have a 20’x40’ liner pool with a sand filter. The pump is about 8 years old. I recently changed the sand in the filter. After restarting the system the water coming into the pool from all 3 inlets was a milky white color, turning the entire pool water to white. I looked closer and discovered it to be a massive amount of almost microscopic sized bubbles. Today, several weeks later the issue is better but the bubbles seem to come and go at random several times a day while the pump is running.

There are no visible leaks around the pump and filter fittings. There is a little air in the clear cover on the pump strainer but it doesn’t appear to be enough to cause the problem I mention. I have isolated each of the pool suctions (two skimmers and pool bottom drain) and tried drawing suction for one at a time but that didn’t change the milky bubbles coming into the pool.

Question #1 – Due to the high pressure on the discharge side of the pump, there couldn’t be an air leak on that side could it?

Question #2 – What would you think could be the most likely cause? These are so many extremely small bubbles that the water looks milky. There are no large bubbles coming into the pool. Could a leak around the pump seal cause this?

Thank you for your assistance,

Hello Clifdd - We'd be glad to assist you.

1) The air leak would not be coming from the discharge side of the pump.

2) We would recommend searching for leaks on the suction side of the equipment. This would include the pump lid, pump intake fitting or seals in the diverter valves on the suction side. If you have a suction cleaner, check the hoses for any holes.

If you have a salt chlorine generator, it is normal for those to produce small bubbles. However, they don't normally create enough to make the pool look cloudy.
