Air in return lines

Hi ,

i have air constantly building in my sand filter which is then returning into the pool. Firstly I have checked and replaced all the O rings , seals , had the pump checked by the manufacturer, relaced the multi port head, looked behind the skimmer box and even a mate who is a pool builder, he looked at the issue and we can't identify the problem. I have a 3 speed pump , it primes well, however 5 min after running it switches to its 2nd speed and this is where the air builds in my system .. could I have an air leak in the main intake line ? if so wouldn't i be loosing water ( I am currently not and have performed a bucket test) or could it be the sand filter ? Help would be appreciated if anyone has come across this before ..

Cheers

Hello Auspool - We have spoken to the manufacturers of the variable speed pumps and they told us that air accumulation on lower speeds is common and nothing to worry about.

You can search for air leaks on the main intake line using lit incense while the pump is running. Waive the incense near suspected leak areas. If there is an air leak, smoke will be drawn in.

Hi, I have looked for leaks using lit and nothing is evident , the air build up is very frustrating as it is now leaving my pump basket completely empty when the timer turns off for the day even though I have a check valve just before the connection to the pump.. the bubble buildup is quite strong , forcing constant air into the return jets... the media was replaced 3 yes ago (glass media) could this be the issue ? It could it be a hairline crack in the pipwork.. this issue only began 6 weeks ago..

The breakdown of the glass media would usually result in a high psi reading but it wouldn't be the cause of air. It could be a crack in the suction side plumbing. Perhaps, the check valve has failed and needs to be replaced.
