We have a Hayward super pump using the UST1102 pump, which I believe is 1 hp. Our pool is inground and 28,000 gallons. I get the feeling that we should have a stronger pump, and we are at the point where we are thinking about a variable speed pump.  My question is two-fold: is a 1 hp pump sufficient for our size pool? and, could we "upgrade" to a 1.5 hp variable speed pump without issue?

The 1HP is strong enough to circulate the water and keep it clean. You could go up to a 1.5HP motor (UST1152) and get more flow. If you do upgrade the motor, we'd recommend the ECM16CU. The ECM16CU is a 1.65HP variable speed motor.

We'd also recommend replacing the seals when you replace the pump. The seal kit for the Super Pump is part number GOKIT3. For saltwater, use GOKIT3SALT.

Thank you very much!  We ordered the 1 hp motor for now, but will probably upgrade in the VERY near future.
